Similar to the recent storm hit the north-west the previous evening, City blew Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This scoreline signalled successive league defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a significant margin off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' ability to juggle league and continental football with a limited squad has been a frequently analyzed topic since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared tired from start to finish, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

The United manager had sought to rotate the squad with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all added vigor, although the exclusion of the in-form Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Manchester City, in comparison, have fewer workload worries. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since recovering from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

After the Break

The clearest change came from the United manager at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the game. Former Manchester City player Park came closest, striking the post, but the visitors were creatively abject and were unable to record a single shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have increased their advantage when a excellent Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to overcome any team who finished above them the previous campaign, City's side now have victories against Arsenal and United to put them in a strong situation after nine games.
