Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
