Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
