New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
