Approximately fifty cars have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Law enforcement report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Police then located numerous other marked automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials say initial examinations suggest the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in association with the incident," they added.

Local authorities stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.

A high-ranking representative stated the incident made him stunned and had to be addressed promptly.

"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
